At 53, I embarked on the most fulfilling journey of my life. This path has been intellectually stimulating, financially rewarding, and, most importantly, has allowed me to make a meaningful impact on my community and clients—all within the realm of real estate.
The business of residential flood mitigation is both unique and groundbreaking. It has saved homeowners thousands, even millions, of dollars over the life of a typical mortgage. These savings stay within the local economy, rather than being sent to FEMA, while fulfilling FEMA’s goal of making structures more resistant to flooding.
As a result of this work, I’ve garnered significant media attention and numerous opportunities to share my story and provide valuable information to others. I’ve spoken to dozens of civic leagues and nonprofit organizations, and I’ve educated over 7,000 real estate professionals on how to buy and sell homes in high-risk flood zones.
In addition to these efforts, I’ve had the privilege of presenting at:
The Virginia Coastal Policy Clinic at the College of William and Mary
The Virginia Institute of Marine Science
The 127th and 128th Bar Association of Virginia Environmental Conferences
Old Dominion University’s Strome Entrepreneurial Center
I’ve also been featured in several publications, including:
Virginia Business (twice)
The Virginian-Pilot, which dubbed me “The Flood Fixer”
The New York Times
Virginia Mercury

Moreover, I actively participate in several key initiatives and workgroups, including:
The Virginia Community Rating System Workgroup, addressing environmentally stressed real estate
The Virginia Joint Sub-Committee for Flooding
The Program for Public Information and Flood Insurance Coverage Improvement Planning
The Virginia Coastal Resilience Master Planning
The Middle Peninsula Planning District’s Fight the Flood initiative
Serving as an eligible grant provider for participating cities
This journey has not only enriched my life but has also enabled me to contribute meaningfully to the community and to the evolving field of real estate in environmentally challenged areas.
